Team "Namma Ooru" is thrilled to announce the launch of its Namma Kovil project on Somavara Pradosham, June 11th, 2018. A maiden one at that! What started as a pilot project for waste management at the Ratnagireeswarar Temple, Besant Nagar organically evolved into an Eco-friendly, Go Green initiative. For any Go Green initiative to be successful, the system in its entirety must work towards bringing about a sustainable eco-system and cannot hinge upon smart waste management alone.

The team along with temple management implemented a total BAN on plastic carry bags, Styrofoam cups inside the temple for flower offerings and prasadam distribution along with waste management solutions. While at it, due care is given to avoid any wastage of food / prasadam too. At the launch, Namma Natarajan gave a crisp talk on the urgent need for this initiative. The devotees who had gathered in large numbers for the somavara pradosaham, shared the ethos as we could see several heads nodding in agreement, when Namma Natarajan quipped in chaste Tamizh -
"பிளாஸ்டிக் நமக்கு விஷமென்றால் பகவானுக்கும் விஷம் தானே? அவர் ஆலகால விஷத்தையே உண்டதினால் அவருக்கு நாமும் பிளாஸ்டிக் விஷத்தை கொடுக்க வேண்டுமா ?" !! :)

When temples become environment-friendly, the ripple effect can be felt all around. The flower lady Poongavanam and Satish who has a fruit cart outside the temple vowed to use paper bags, and cloth bags as alternatives to the plastic carry bags.
NOF volunteers having set up the process of collecting the waste inside the temple premise, educated the cleaning, Mada palli staff and the priests to throw differently. The composting process has also started for the organic waste generated at the temple.
Finally all the devotees took the pledge to not to bring plastic bags inside the temple.

"நான் இன்று முதல், பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகளை கோவிலுக்குள் கொண்டு வர மாட்டேன் என்று ஸ்ரீ ரத்னகிரீஸ்வரருக்கு முன் உறுதி கூறுகிறேன்

Now the organic waste like NIRMALYAM composted inside the temple premises and the dry wastes goes to recycling. The temple is "நம்ம க்ரீன் கோவில்" now, a zero waste zone. Special thanks to the temple management "Bhakta Mandali" for their support.
As the temple doors closed , the "no plastics" sign board outside the temple shone bright. The team walked out with the sakkarai pongal taste still lingering, with a sense of purpose, peace and contentment and lot of hope.
After all cleanliness is next to godliness .. Clichéd ,may be but so true.
